Frequently Asked Questions

What are the benefits of owing a tungsten ring by Kevin John Collection?
Nickel free, hardness, hypo-allergenic, scratch resistant and long lasting beauty are, some of the reassurances. Tungsten rings in the Kevin John Collection take a brilliant high polish and resist scratching longer than any metal ever offered to the public. These rings are roughly ten times harder than 18k gold and four times harder than Titanium. Kevin John tungsten rings will never bend out of shape.

What is Tungsten and Tungsten Carbide?
Tungsten is a precious, rare metal which is scratch-proof and very difficult to produce. Tungsten, previously referred to as Heavy Stone, is a very hard and dense metal symbolized by a W on the periodic elements table that is extracted from Wolframite ore.

Tungsten is used as the filament wire in most light bulbs because it melts at an extraordinary 6,100 degrees Fahrenheit, the highest melting point of all metals. On it’s own tungsten is vulnerable to scratches and damage just like any other metal, such as titanium and steel. Tungsten does not gain its extreme hardness until it is combined with a carbon alloy, transferring it into tungsten carbide (WC) with a hardness between 8.5 and 9.5 on the Mohs hardness scale. Tungsten carbide is four times harder than titanium, twice as hard as steel, it is virtually unscratchable, and has been widely used industrial applications such as cutting tools, mining machinery, and rocket engine nozzles. A special formulation of Tungsten Carbide has been used as well for the production of scratch proof wrist watches for nearly forty years.

What benefits in design does the Kevin John Collection offer?
Imagine wearing a ring that is permanently polished – ALWAYS looking new! The enduring polish of a Kevin John tungsten ring together with the solid weight, speak of commitment, security and an everlasting bond. Conventional bands look beautiful when they are new because the design details and edges are sharp and polished. Give these same rings 12 months of everyday wear and tear and the entire look and most of the design details will be worn down and dull, even with platinum.

How should I clean and care for my tungsten ring?
Your tungsten carbide ring requires essentially no care. Your tungsten ring from the Kevin John Collection is 100% tungsten carbide high polish and will retain its luster and polish forever. A soft cloth will eliminate fingerprints and smudges. If your ring has a brushed finish it may get some micro scratches. The tungsten didn’t scratch: rather, the metal it rubbed against embedded itself in your ring. In most cases a tooth brush and mid detergent will remove the foreign material.

Avoid cleaning with harsh chemicals and DO NOT LEAVE IN THE ULTASONIC CLEANING MACHINE FOR MORE THAN A MINUTE.

Can a tungsten ring be sized?
Tungsten rings CANNOT be resized. The metal is too hard for conventional jeweller’s tools.

What if tungsten ring gets stuck on your finger, can it be safely removed if necessary?
Yes, first try removing by soaking your hand in a bowl of ice water for a minute or two, then apply a heavy lubricant like petroleum jelly on the finger between the ring and the knuckle, hold the ring with a cloth and gently pull with a rocking motion. If this procedure fails see the emergency removal of tungsten rings.
